Pachypodium lamerei, often called the Madagascar Palm (though it’s not a true palm), is a striking succulent tree with a spiny, silver-grey trunk topped by a crown of long, arching green leaves, giving it a bold, tropical-desert look. Native to Madagascar, it’s slow-growing but can eventually reach impressive heights indoors, making it a standout statement plant. Thriving in bright, direct light, it prefers a warm, dry environment and a gritty, well-draining cactus mix. Water thoroughly only when the soil is completely dry, and reduce watering in winter when it enters dormancy, often shedding some or all of its leaves before regrowing them in spring. Avoid overwatering at all costs, as this can cause rot. Best placed in sunny living rooms, south-facing windows, or conservatories. In the UK, mature Pachypodium lamerei specimens are relatively uncommon and highly sought after for their sculptural form. Rarity score: ★★★★☆. Easy-keeping score: ★★★★☆ — very low-maintenance if given plenty of light and minimal water. A dramatic, architectural plant that’s equal parts tropical and desert chic.
