Aeonium Nigrum
Dark, glossy and effortlessly cool, Aeonium nigrum is all about contrast. Its deep burgundy to almost-black rosettes sit on branching stems, creating a bold, sculptural look that stands out in any plant display.
Native to the Canary Islands, Aeoniums are adapted to a slightly different rhythm than most succulents — they actively grow in the cooler months and can slow down in peak summer heat. This makes them a great option for adding interest when other plants are doing very little.
Low-maintenance but high impact, this is one of those plants that instantly elevates a space.
Care Guide
Light
Loves bright light and can handle direct sun. The more light it gets, the darker and richer the colour will be.
Water
Water when the soil has dried out. During its growing season (autumn to spring), water more regularly. In summer, reduce watering as the plant may go semi-dormant.
Temperature
Prefers mild to warm conditions. Protect from frost and avoid prolonged cold.
Soil
Use a free-draining cactus or succulent mix to prevent excess moisture around the roots.
Feeding
Feed occasionally during the growing season with a diluted succulent fertiliser.
Top Tip
If the rosettes start to close up or look smaller, it’s often a sign of heat stress or dormancy — not a problem, just ease off watering and let it rest.
Pet Safety
Generally considered non-toxic, but best kept out of reach as a precaution.
