Playful petals, pollinator-friendly, and full of personality – a garden favourite with a twist.

Osteospermum ‘Philip Spoon’, also known as African Daisy, is a standout cultivar known for its quirky spoon-shaped petals and vibrant, daisy-like blooms. Native to South Africa, Osteospermum naturally thrives in hot, dry climates – making it a fantastic summer performer in UK gardens. ‘Philip Spoon’ brings a splash of soft purples and pinks, often with a contrasting eye, and flowers profusely from late spring well into autumn.

Care Guide
This sun-loving perennial is easy-care and perfect for both beginners and seasoned gardeners:

  • Position: Full sun is essential for the best flower display. Choose a bright, sheltered spot.

  • Watering: Water regularly when first planted. Once established, it’s drought-tolerant and only needs watering during dry spells.

  • Feeding: Feed every 4–6 weeks with a general-purpose fertiliser to encourage repeat blooming.

  • Deadheading: Remove faded blooms to promote continuous flowering.

  • Soil: Prefers well-drained soil. Will tolerate poor or sandy soils, especially in containers or raised beds.

  • Winter Care: Treat as a tender perennial in the UK. In warmer regions, it may survive winter outdoors. Elsewhere, bring into a cold greenhouse or treat as an annual.

Best Placement Outdoors
Perfect for sun-drenched borders, containers, patio pots, or cottage-style garden beds. Its playful form and bold colour make it a great front-of-border plant or filler in summer arrangements.

Rarity & Ease
While Osteospermums are familiar to many, ‘Philip Spoon’ remains a rarer and more unique variety, especially noted for its unusual spoon petals. It’s very easy to care for, with long flowering periods and great drought resistance – ideal for low-maintenance, high-impact planting schemes.
