Opuntia Macrocentra, commonly known as Espinas Negras for its striking dark spines, is a dramatic prickly pear species native to Mexico. This specimen is a mature, impressive plant with substantial growth and active flowering capability, making it a showstopping addition to any succulent collection.

The plant features distinctive dark, almost black spines contrasting beautifully against its blue-green paddle-shaped stems. During the growing season, it produces vibrant yellow flowers followed by edible purple fruits, adding seasonal interest and colour.

Care is straightforward. Provide bright, direct sunlight for at least six hours daily to maintain spine colour and encourage flowering. Water sparingly during the growing season (spring and summer), allowing soil to dry completely between waterings. In winter, reduce watering significantly. Use well-draining cactus or succulent compost to prevent root rot. Feed monthly during the growing season with a low-nitrogen fertiliser. This variety thrives in warm conditions and tolerates drought exceptionally well. It's ideal for sunny windowsills, conservatories, or outdoor gardens in milder climates. The large specimen size means it makes an immediate visual impact and requires minimal maintenance once established. Perfect for experienced succulent enthusiasts or anyone seeking a bold, architectural plant with genuine character and flowering potential.
