Candy-striped and cactus-like – the perfect blend of cute and curious.
Often called the ‘Indian Corn Cob’ Euphorbia, Euphorbia mammillaris ‘Variegata’ is a beautifully unusual succulent native to South Africa. Despite its cactus-like appearance, it belongs to the Euphorbia family and produces small, columnar stems that twist and cluster over time. The variegated form features creamy white and pale green marbling, with blushing pink or red tips under bright light – making it a playful, eye-catching addition to any sunny windowsill.
Care Guide
Compact, colourful, and almost unkillable – a great choice for beginners or collectors:
- Light: Thrives in bright light or full sun. The more light it receives, the brighter its colouration – pink tips are a sign of a happy plant!
- Watering: Water only when the soil is bone dry. In winter, reduce to once a month or less.
- Humidity: Prefers dry air. It is not suited to high-humidity environments.
- Temperature: Warmth-loving – best between 18–30°C. Not frost tolerant. Protect from cold drafts.
- Feeding: Feed once a month in spring and summer with a cactus or succulent fertiliser.
- Soil: Requires fast-draining soil – a cactus mix with added sand or perlite is perfect.
Best Placement in the Home
Ideal for a bright windowsill, succulent arrangement, or sunny shelf display. Pair with neutral ceramic pots or gravel-topped containers to let its quirky shape and colours shine.
Rarity & Ease
Rare in variegated form, Euphorbia mammillaris ‘Variegata’ is a must-have for fans of architectural succulents. It’s extremely easy to care for and grows well in both homes and greenhouses. A great way to add sculptural interest and colour to your succulent collection.
Caution: As with all Euphorbias, the white sap can be irritating to skin and eyes – handle with care and keep away from pets and children.
