Euphorbia erytrea – The African Candelabra Tree

About the Euphorbia erytrea

Euphorbia erytrea, also known as the African Candelabra Tree, is a striking succulent species native to the arid regions of Eritrea and Ethiopia. With its tall, columnar structure, ridged stems, and geometric symmetry, it closely resembles a cactus but is, in fact, a euphorbia. When fully grown, a specimen can reach up to 6 feet tall, making it a bold architectural plant perfect for creating an indoor desertscape or a modern botanical feature.

A Plant with a Story

Hailing from northeastern Africa, Euphorbia erytrea has adapted to extreme drought conditions, making it a symbol of resilience and minimalism. This species belongs to the enormous Euphorbia genus, which includes over 2,000 species ranging from low groundcovers to towering trees. Its candelabra shape has made it a popular choice for Scandi, boho, and contemporary interiors, blending sculptural form with botanical interest.

Care Guide

Water: Water sparingly. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, reduce watering even further—once every 4–6 weeks is sufficient. Overwatering is the most common cause of problems.

Light: Prefers bright, direct sunlight. A south- or west-facing window is ideal. It can tolerate some light shade but thrives in full sun.

Humidity: Very low humidity requirements. Perfect for dry indoor environments.

Best Room: Excellent for living rooms, sunrooms, conservatories, or well-lit offices where its full height and form can be appreciated.

Pet Safe? Toxic to pets and humans. The sap is a skin and eye irritant and should be handled with care—wear gloves when pruning or repotting.

Beginner or Advanced? Beginner to intermediate – very low maintenance as long as it’s not overwatered. Ideal for those looking for a dramatic, low-effort plant.

Additional Information

  • Not a true cactus – despite its appearance, it’s part of the Euphorbiaceae family.
  • Produces a milky white sap when cut, which is toxic and should be kept away from pets, children, and broken skin.
  • Loves being slightly root-bound and only needs repotting every few years.
  • Can be grown outdoors in summer (UK zone dependent), but must be brought inside before temperatures drop below 10°C.
  • Very slow-growing, so its size and maturity make a 6-foot specimen exceptionally desirable and hard to find.

If you’re looking for a statement succulent with a sculptural edge, Euphorbia erytrea delivers effortless impact. Its clean lines, towering form, and easy-going care routine make it the perfect centrepiece for minimalist homes or curated indoor plant jungles.
