Architectural, sun-loving, and sculptural – a cactus lookalike with a twist.

Often mistaken for a cactus, Euphorbia erytrea (sometimes called the African Candelabra Tree) is actually a succulent from the dry, rocky highlands of Eritrea and Ethiopia. Its upright, columnar stems form elegant ridges with small paired spines, creating a striking silhouette perfect for modern interiors. This easy-going plant thrives on neglect and brings instant structure to any space – all while being surprisingly light to move and simple to maintain.

Care Guide
This Euphorbia is built for survival – low effort, high impact:

  • Light: Loves bright, direct light. A south- or west-facing window is ideal. The more sun, the better.

  • Watering: Water sparingly. Let the soil fully dry out between waterings. In winter, it may only need watering once every 4–6 weeks.

  • Humidity: Thrives in dry air. No misting or special humidity required.

  • Temperature: Happy in temperatures of 18–28°C. Keep away from frost or cold draughts.

  • Feeding: Feed once a month in spring and summer with a cactus or succulent fertiliser.

  • Soil: Use a fast-draining cactus mix or a combination of compost, perlite, and grit. Ensure the pot has drainage holes to avoid rot.

⚠️ Note: Like all Euphorbias, it contains a milky sap that is toxic if ingested and can be irritating to the skin or eyes – handle with care and keep away from pets and children.

Best Placement in the Home
Perfect for sunny corners, contemporary living rooms, or minimalist interiors where its sculptural form can shine. Works brilliantly as a focal point in ceramic or terracotta planters.

Rarity & Ease
While not the rarest Euphorbia, Euphorbia erytrea is still an uncommon find in its full, mature form, especially in boutique shops. It’s incredibly easy to care for, making it perfect for beginners, plant minimalists, and sun-loving collectors alike.
