Small, mighty, and marvellously weird.

Our Drosera, commonly known as the Sundew, is a living work of art — and a natural predator. With its dew-covered tentacles and sticky, glistening traps, this carnivorous beauty doesn’t just look magical, it’s functional too — feeding on unsuspecting gnats and midges that land on its jewel-like droplets.

Perfect for curious collectors, terrarium lovers, or anyone fed up with fungus gnats.

🌿 Meet the Plant: Drosera spp.

There are over 200 species in the Drosera family, and we stock a curated selection of the most beautiful and terrarium-suited varieties. Native to boggy environments across the world, from Australia to South Africa to Europe, these plants use enzymatic mucilage (yep, sticky goo) to catch and digest insects.

Each leaf is covered in glistening tentacles, often tinged with red or pink, which move slowly to wrap around prey once captured. It’s one of nature’s most elegant and eerie plant movements.

🛠️ Care Requirements (Brief & In-Depth)

Light:

  • Essential: Bright light is key. A sunny windowsill or bright grow light will keep your Drosera compact and colourful.
  • If light is too low, leaves will lose red tint and tentacle production may drop.

Watering:

  • Only use rainwater, distilled, or reverse osmosis water. Tap water can kill it due to mineral build-up.
  • Keep soil constantly moist, ideally with a tray of water beneath the pot (aka the tray method).

Humidity:

  • Likes moderate to high humidity (especially tropical varieties). Great in a terrarium, but many hardy types do well in open air.

Feeding:

  • Catches plenty on its own! If indoors and pest-free, you can feed it tiny insects like fruit flies or even crushed fish food once every few weeks.
  • No fertiliser needed.

🏡 Best Rooms to Display

  • Kitchen windowsill: Bright light, occasional gnats = happy Drosera.
  • Home office or study: A natural gnat trap and living science experiment.
  • Terrariums or glass domes: Boosts humidity and turns it into a talking point.
  • Bathrooms with light: Some varieties love the extra humidity if there’s a window.

🔍 Rarity & Easy-Keeping Score

  • Rarity Score (UK Market): ★★★☆☆
While you’ll see Venus Flytraps in garden centres, good-quality Drosera are much rarer and often mislabelled or mistreated. We source ours from trusted specialist growers.
  • Easy-Keeping Score: ★★★★☆
Easy if you give it rainwater and sunlight. Trickier if you try tap water or forget the light.

💡 Fun Fact

Charles Darwin once called Drosera “one of the most wonderful plants in the world.” He studied it for years and even fed it milk, believing its intelligent movement could rival animals.
