Glowing colour. Drought-proof charm. A hidden gem of the succulent world.
Delosperma pruinosum, sometimes referred to as the Frosted Ice Plant, is a low-growing, mat-forming succulent native to Southern Africa. Known for its sparkling, icy-looking foliage and brilliantly vivid daisy-like blooms, this sun-loving groundcover thrives in harsh, dry climates – making it a tough but beautiful option for collectors and outdoor plant lovers alike. The shimmering, slightly translucent leaves give it a frosted finish, adding texture and interest even when not in flower.
Care Guide
Compact, hardy, and fast-growing – this one’s an easy keeper:
- Light: Thrives in full sun. Needs at least 4–6 hours of direct light daily to flower and stay compact.
- Watering: Drought-tolerant – water only when soil is bone dry. In winter, cut back almost completely.
- Humidity: Prefers dry air and well-ventilated conditions. Avoid humid rooms.
- Temperature: Enjoys warmth but surprisingly cold hardy down to -10°C in well-draining soil. Protect from prolonged damp.
- Feeding: Rarely needed, but you can feed lightly in spring with a cactus fertiliser to encourage blooms.
- Soil: Requires gritty, fast-draining soil – cactus mix with sand or perlite is ideal.
Best Placement in the Home or Garden
Indoors, it’s best on a south-facing windowsill, dry conservatory, or as part of a succulent display. Outdoors, it makes a fantastic rockery plant, container accent, or even a drought-tolerant ground cover in raised beds or alpine gardens.
Rarity & Ease
While more common in outdoor xeriscaping collections, Delosperma pruinosum is still unusual as a boutique indoor offering. It’s extremely easy to care for, making it a great addition for both beginners and collectors looking for something hardy and different.
