Blechnum brasiliense fire leaf
If you want something a little different from your typical fern, this is it. Blechnum brasiliense ‘Fire Leaf’ is all about contrast — fresh new growth emerges in vibrant shades of red to deep pink before maturing into rich green, giving you that constant “new leaf moment”.
Native to the tropical regions of South America, this fern has a more structured, almost palm-like growth habit compared to softer ferns, making it feel more architectural and premium in a space.
Care Guide
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the delicate fronds.
Water
Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Do not allow it to fully dry out — this is not a drought-tolerant plant.
Humidity
Loves humidity. Ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, or grouped with other plants. Regular misting will help keep it looking its best.
Temperature
Thrives in warm conditions. Keep above 12°C and away from cold draughts.
Soil
Use a well-draining but moisture-retentive mix. A houseplant compost with added bark or perlite works well.
Feeding
Feed every 2–4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced houseplant fertiliser.
Top Tip
Crispy edges usually mean it’s too dry — either the soil or the air. Keep both levels up for that lush, tropical look.
Pet Safety
Generally considered non-toxic and pet-friendly.
