Astrophytum Ornatum

A true collector’s classic, Astrophytum ornatum is one of the most recognisable and architectural cacti in the world. Native to the high limestone hills of central Mexico, this species is known for its striking columnar shape, defined ribs, and beautiful white flecking that almost looks hand-painted.

In its natural habitat, it can grow impressively tall over time, making it a real statement plant as it matures. Under the right conditions, it can also reward you with soft yellow flowers from the crown during the warmer months.

Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright light. Place in a sunny spot such as a south or west-facing window. The more light it gets, the better it will grow and maintain its shape.

Water

Water sparingly. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. During spring and summer, water occasionally. In autumn and winter, reduce watering significantly — almost none is needed.

Temperature

Prefers warm conditions but can tolerate cooler temperatures in winter if kept completely dry. Avoid frost at all costs.

Soil

Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.

Feeding

Feed with a cactus fertiliser once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).

Top Tip

Less is more with this one. Overwatering is the quickest way to cause issues — when in doubt, leave it out.

Pet Safety

Generally considered non-toxic, but best kept out of reach due to spines.
