Stone-textured. Deeply veined. Fiercely rare.
Native to the tropical rainforests of Borneo, Alocasia melo is a jewel Alocasia with an otherworldly texture – its thick, stiff leaves feel almost like sculpted rubber or carved stone. With a cool-toned, blue-green hue and deeply embossed veins, this compact plant looks like something out of a prehistoric jungle. It naturally grows on rocky outcrops and limestone-rich soils, making it surprisingly hardy for such a visually exotic plant.
Care Guide
Alocasia melo is a little particular, but with the right setup, it becomes a slow-growing, long-lasting gem:
-
Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Avoid direct sun which can bleach or scorch the thick leaves.
-
Watering: Water when the top 2–3cm of soil feels dry. Avoid letting the roots sit in water – good drainage is essential.
-
Humidity: Requires 60–80% humidity. It will tolerate average home humidity but thrives in higher-moisture environments.
-
Temperature: Keep warm – ideally between 18–27°C. Avoid draughts and cold corners.
-
Feeding: Lightly feed once a month during the growing season with a diluted, balanced aroid feed.
-
Soil: Use a chunky aroid mix with excellent drainage. A blend of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir or moss works well.
Best Placement in the Home
Perfect for a plant shelf, cabinet, or bright bathroom with steady warmth and humidity. Its compact growth and matte finish make it ideal for display alongside ceramics and textured interiors.
Rarity & Ease
Still rare and highly collectible in the UK, Alocasia melo is a firm favourite among aroid collectors. It’s moderately easy to care for if you can offer warmth, stable humidity, and a good watering routine. A compact, textured showpiece that adds richness to any indoor jungle.
