Ethereal, rare, and radiant – a mythical masterpiece in mint and silver.
A shimmering evolution of the beloved Alocasia baginda, ‘Dragon Scale Mint’ is an ultra-rare cultivar prized for its soft mint-green tones, silvery sheen, and deeply etched veining that mimics dragonhide. Native to the tropical rainforests of Borneo, this compact Alocasia has adapted to low light and high humidity beneath the jungle canopy – making it a perfect jewel for indoor collections. Unlike the deeper green ‘Dragon Scale’, this version glows with a cool, fresh brightness that sets it apart.
Care Guide
Striking in looks but delicate in temperament, ‘Dragon Scale Mint’ thrives with gentle, consistent care:
-
Light: Bright, indirect light helps maintain its unique colouring. Avoid direct sun which can bleach the soft mint tones.
-
Watering: Allow the top 2–3cm of soil to dry before watering. Consistency is key – don’t let it completely dry out or become soggy.
-
Humidity: High humidity (60–80%) is essential to prevent browning edges and maintain vibrant foliage. A humidifier is ideal.
-
Temperature: Prefers warm, stable temperatures (18–26°C). Keep away from cold windows and draughts.
-
Feeding: Feed monthly during the growing season with a diluted houseplant fertiliser suitable for aroids.
-
Soil: Use a well-draining, airy aroid mix with orchid bark, perlite, and quality compost. Avoid compact or water-retaining soils.
Best Placement in the Home
Perfect for a bright bathroom, plant shelf, or decorative nook where light and humidity are stable. Pairs beautifully with light ceramics or glass pots to highlight its minty hues and texture.
Rarity & Ease
Extremely rare and prized by collectors, Alocasia ‘Dragon Scale Mint’ is a true treasure in the plant world. It's moderately easy for experienced plant keepers or attentive beginners who can offer the warmth and humidity it loves. A botanical jewel that elevates any plant collection.
